As mobile phones and tablets become more and more commonplace, the need for a mobile-friendly website is a must for many businesses. Facebook, the second largest site on the internet, reports that 200 million of it’s active users (over 30%) access the site from their mobile devices, and that mobile users are twice as active as non-mobile users.
The majority of websites probably don’t need a mobile version until the amount of mobile traffic is over 5% of the site traffic. However if your site is mainly user generated content then it should be top of your wish list.
Once users know that there is a mobile version, mobile traffic will come and all types of websites from e-commerce to small brochures online can benefit and indeed for some businesses it can be mission critical.
In the main there are 3 ways to make a site mobile friendly:
1. Use a custom stylesheet to restyle your existing web pages when visited by mobile traffic (may not always be possible, depending on your original design)
2. Create a Mobile Web Application (Web App) designed specifically for mobile devices, normally a cut down version or subset of your website, and accessed by the browser on your phone or tablet. Web Apps are now capable of being viewed across a broad spectrum of mobile devices (but not all) and can be developed quickly (as little a few days) and is the popular choice for developing a mobile site. A blog site may only need a plugin that does all the necessary presentation to mobile devices.
3. Create a Native Code Application for specific devices such as iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia or Android (1 for each). These require serious development and budget. iPhone Apps for example must be first submitted to Apple and if approved, are available for download via iTunes even if they are free applications. Although expensive in time and resources, some companies may still consider Native Code Applications.
Start by looking at your visitor demographics and determine the number of mobile users. Is it up to 5% of your total traffic, i.e. is it worth considering?
As more people start using the internet on the move, the need for a mobile site is more important. It is crucial that your visitors have a great user experience or they will leave and go elsewhere.
